Slab Detection And Repair

What Is The Risk Causing A Water Leak?

Slab leaks can be particularly devastating and costly. Although they can be caused by a variety of serious plumbing problems and may feature both hot and cold streams of water, they typically progress in a predictable manner. When a pipe that runs through your home’s walls or under your house’s foundation develops a leak, the constant stream of water from the broken pipe pools under your foundation’s “slab” and may cause major damage.

This would be a sign of a possible slab leak, you have water coming out of the slab underneath the house where there is no reason for there to be water pulling up.

Slab Leak Detection and Repair

Is your water bill unusually high, or do you hear the sound of water running but no visible water to be seen? If yes, you may soon be getting a letter from the city stating your home is consuming an unusually large amount of water. A quick check of your water meter will tell you if there is a leak at your home.

Slab leaks typically occur when the piping underneath your concrete foundation deteriorates, causing pinhole leaks in your plumbing. As water leaks under the foundation of your home, it can rise to the surface causing discoloration of flooring, damp spots in carpet, mildew smells, warping of baseboards and flooring material.

First, turn off anything in the home that may have a small drip or leak like toilets and faucets. Then be sure nobody is running water inside the home while you check the meter. In the middle of your meter near the numbers you will see a triangle or multi-prong disc. You can have someone inside turn on a faucet while you are looking at the meter to identify the disc that moves. This disc or red triangle should stay steady or not move with everything off and no one running water. If the disc is moving you have a leak somewhere past the water meter.

What is a Slab Leak?

Slab leak is term used in the plumbing industry that refers to a water leak coming from a water line under a concrete floor of a building. Residential homes or commercial buildings built on a concrete slab or pad typically have water supply lines installed by plumbers under them to deliver water to the plumbing fixtures.

Slab leaks can occur in many types of water lines such as copper water lines, galvanized or metal water lines and plastic water lines ( CPVC or PEX ). Many factors contribute to a slab leak. Some of the common causes of slab leaks are rubbing of the pipe on a hard object, deterioration of pipe by soil or water conditions and defects in the material or installation process.
