9 Easy Care Houseplants That Will Liven Up Your DFW Home

Decorating your home with a variety of house plants is an inexpensive way to brighten up your home. It’s also a good way to clean the air. Furnishings, upholstery, synthetic building materials, cleaning products, and lots of other things can emit a variety of toxic compounds, like formaldehyde. Indoor air pollution can also be caused by pollen, bacteria, and molds, as outdoor air contaminants like car exhaust find their way into buildings. All of these contaminants can trigger allergies and asthma attacks. Many of us don’t have a green thumb – and some may say they may be the grim reaper for plant life. But, some varieties of plants are easy to care for.

• Aloe Vera: If you suffer from dry skin or sunburns or you tend to singe yourself on cookware, aloe vera is your friend. This little plant can quickly grow quite easily on the window sill in your kitchen or bathroom. Then you can break off a small piece to use whenever you need it.
• Bromeliads: This plant offers a variety of hues including rich red, golden yellow, and bright green. The color makes decorating dull spaces easy.
• Dieffenbachia: Native to tropical climates, this little plant grows quickly in your home because of the constant warm temperatures. It can get bushy, so it works well in floor containers.
• Dragon Tree: The Madagascar native Dagon Tree is one of the easiest indoor plants to grow and maintain. These trees can grow up to 6ft high indoors, but they’re slow growing. But are good for corners.
• Philodendron: Philodendrons look good in either a pot on your table or hanging in a basket, depending on your space needs. However, it is important to note that they come in two types – climbing and upright. The most common varieties are the climbing type, which has heart-shaped leaves and a deep green color. Climbing varieties can be trained around windows, up poles, or down the sides of containers. The upright types tend to have large leaves and be more compact. Upright varieties are also slower growing but can become quite large if you let them.
• Pothos: Pothos are often confused with philodendrons, but pothos have more variations and colors in their leaves. Pothos are great for low-light situations.
• Rubber Plant: Rubber trees can be enjoyed as either medium-sized house plants or grown to become focal points, beautiful indoor trees. They have large deep green leaves which are quite durable.
• Snake Plant: These plants can be neglected for weeks at a time. They can grow in low-light areas and survive droughts and still grow. They have strappy leaves and architectural shapes.
• ZZ Plant: ZZ plant stems grow in a graceful, wand-like shape that tapers to a point with fleshy, oval-shaped leaves. The entire plant has a waxy, shiny coating that makes it appear to resemble those made of plastic. And it’s almost indestructible.
