Dallas Homeowners Need To Know: How To Tell If Your Property Has Been Rewired

You should be able to tell if a house has been rewired recently by inspecting exposed parts of the wiring and by the electricity meter and fuse box (now known as the consumer unit). You can ask to do this when being shown around a property you are thinking of buying, or by inspecting your home.

Find out when rewiring is necessary and the building regulations related to wiring work and electrics

Electrical Rewiring – Everything You Need To Know

We are looking forward to coming to your home soon to carry out an electrical rewire. We will make every effort to make sure the whole process runs as smoothly as possible and you are left totally satisfied with the work that has been done.

This guide provides you with all the information you need to know about the rewire, what we need you to do and about the whole process from start to finish. Please keep this information in a safe place, as it has important information and advice that you will need.

In most rooms your decoration will be affected. Existing single sockets will be replaced with double sockets. A mains operated smoke detector and a burglar alarm will be installed as part of the work and wiring will be concealed in the walls, wherever possible.

In some properties their construction may mean that the walls cannot be drilled. Therefore new wiring may need to be fitted in plastic trunking. If you have installed any electrical circuits or fittings with permission from your housing office, they will be tested and, if suitable, reconnected.

This includes items such as electric showers, security lights, alarms, doorbells and electrical fittings. Any electrical circuits you have installed, where you have not requested permission, will also be tested. If these do not pass electrical safety tests, they may be disconnected.

Electrical Testing and Rewiring

When testing is due on a property, all tenants will be sent a letter informing them of inclusion in the safe electrical programme and will be provided with an information booklet from the Council. Our contractor will then send a letter with appointment details for the initial electrical test. Following this test, tenants are advised as to any further works that will be required to bring their electrical system up to the level of current regulations. This is mainly non intrusive work and findings from the electrical testing will determine the levels of upgrading required for each house. Scope of works will include the fitting of hardwired smoke detectors to all houses in the programme.
