LED and LCD – what’s the difference? It’s a question we hear a lot from budding home theater shoppers. Blame the acronyms. While yesterday’s consumers had to make a simple choice between CRT and rear-projection television sets, today’s consumers are confronted with plasma, LCD, DLP, OLED, and laser televisions. Technically speaking, a LED TV is also an LCD TV, as the screen on both is a liquid crystal display. An LCD display has two layers of glass that are polarized and joined together, the liquid crystals then pass or block the light to display the television picture.
The crystals do not produce any light as the light comes from a series of lamps at the back of the screen. On an LCD TV, the lamps at the back of the screen are fluorescent lamps, whilst on a LED TV, the lights at the back of the screen are Light Emitting Diodes (LED).
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display): A prevalent model of HDTVs, LCDs are flat panel displays through which light can pass or be blocked. The LCD doesn’t produce its own light; this is done by additional lighting (see backlit and edge-lit for more info). LCD HDTVs are available in a variety of sizes and have wide viewing angles, making them ideal for almost any size room.
LED (Light Emitting Diode): A semiconductor device that produces light from electricity. LEDs are often used to backlight LCD displays, which results in a clearer picture.
