Earlier this week, it was announced that they are the first to offer material health evaluations for six of their high-efficiency toilets (HETs). The International Living Future Institute is an environmental non-governmental organization committed to creating communities that are socially just, culturally rich and ecologically restorative. They operate the Living Building Challenge, which requires a rigorous and progressive building performance standard.
Declare labels disclose the types of materials, chemicals, or elements in a product that are known to pose a risk to human health or the environment. During the rigorous Declare label evaluation process, TOTO learned that they would have to change its products to be Living Building Challenge Compliant because the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in the toilets’ rubber flappers, plastic refill tubes and seat pads was hazardous. As a result, TOTO now offers PVC-free high-efficiency toilets. They produce the only toilets in the Declare database that comply with the Living Building Challenge standard.
As part of TOTO’s goal of producing reliable fixtures without harmful chemicals, they partnered with Sustainable Minds to develop Material Health Overview (MHO). Sustainable Minds provides environmental product transparency applications, data and services to help manufacturers design and market safer and environmentally friendly products. The Material Health Overview is designed to help consumers make safer purchase decisions by providing information about the product development and manufacturing in an understandable way.
