New Ideas For Summer Fun

Keeping kids entertained in the summer isn’t always easy. Most parents have limited time and already have all those swimming and karate lessons planned. The Dallas Morning News recently published Guide Live’s list of new ideas that might spark some interest and inspire your imagination.

Delightfully weird things to do in Dallas-Fort Worth…

Start of Summer Watergun Fight

Dallas Derby Devils: Choose Your Own Adventure

Practice some mind control at a choose-your-own-adventure roller derby match on July 9 at Dad’s Broadway Skate Land in Mesquite. What does that mean?  Fans can make a donation to change the game, with options such as mind control, which causes one player to secretly play for the other team. Devious.

Dub Splash

It’s all about the Volkswagens at Sandy Lake Amusement Park in Carrollton on July 10. Expect about 800 examples, from “rust buckets” to cars valued at up to $100,000, at the event, which is billed as Texas’ largest VW car show.

Deep Ellum Swimsuit Pub Crawl

Go bar hopping in your bikini during the July 13  installment of the themed monthly pub crawl series. It’s not entirely beach-accurate: You have to wear shoes and dudes must wear a shirt of some sort.

Cats meet coffee at this pop-up event at the Cat Connection pet-supply store July 16 and Aug. 13 (the felines are adoptable).

Disco Kids

It’ll Do Club gets turned over to a family crowd during this event series, featuring dancing to pop hits, a light-up dance floor and plenty of opportunities for parents to show off the dances of their youth. You even get your hand stamped at the door. July 22 and many other dates.

If your idea of a classic video is that cat dressed as a shark riding a Roomba, you might want to check out this celebration of one of the internet’s favorite video subjects. Catch a curated collection of the best at the Texas Theatre on Aug. 24.

Retropalooza

This one’s all about pop culture nostalgia. Expect cosplay, vintage toys, free-play console and arcade games, and more Oct. 1-2 at Arlington Convention Center.

Pull For Puppies

Teams of humans will take part in a tug-of-war tournament to benefit Operation Kindness at the Beach at Craig Ranch in McKinney on Oct. 8.
