Garbage Disposal – a Green Recycling Machine

insinkeratorYour garbage disposal is more than a convenience; it’s a green machine that recycles food waste and prevents health and environmental hazards.

Food scraps account for 10-to-20% of all household waste. If bagged and disposed in landfills, food scraps convert to methane, a greenhouse gas harmful to the atmosphere. If burned to generate power, food scraps are inefficient because they’re about 70% water.

The best way to dispose of food scraps is to grind them up and flush them into sewer systems designed to process human waste.

Garbage disposers also provide other significant benefits:

  • Health – keeping food out of trash keeps away rodents and other pests
  • Energy saving – fewer trucks hauling food waste to landfills
  • Energy efficient – food waste disposers use only about 50 cents worth of electricity per year

How to Use and Maintain Your Garbage Disposal

The problem isn’t getting people to use garbage disposals; it’s getting them to use them the right way. The food disposers installed in most homes aren’t capable of handling large loads all at once. Nor are they especially good at processing potato peels, celery, corn cobs, turkey dressing, and bones. To keep a disposal running properly and to prevent a clogged kitchen drain, follow these simple guidelines:

  • Run the disposal along with a moderate-to-strong flow of cold water. Continue to run cold water for 15 seconds after grinding is complete to carry the waste out of your pipes and into the sewer.
  • Don’t overload the disposal by attempting to grind too much at a time. It’s better to have a steady flow of small amounts than to fill the sink with food waste before flipping the switch.
  • Avoid using hot water when grinding food waste.
  • Don’t pour grease or fat into a disposal or drain.
  • Run ice cubes through a disposal to sharpen the blades.
  • Use a disposal cleaner to clear up bad odors caused by build-up. You can also grind citrus fruit peels to freshen up the drain.

Disposers can be cleaned with Disposer Care®. This product is available in major home centers, hardware and grocery stores.
