Southlake, Tex., May 5, 2009 – Berkey’s Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc., is continuing its affiliation with professional motorcycle racing as a sponsor of Round 3 of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross National motorcycle races to be held at Freestone County Raceway, Wortham, Tex., June 5-7, 2009.
Berkey’s President Bill Stevens said, “As an avid amateur motocross rider, I am proud to have my company associated with the nation’s top professional race series. These riders are the best in the business, the same as Berkey’s.”
Motocross is a form of motorcycle sport racing held on enclosed off-road circuits. The sport derives its name is from a blend of the French words for “motorcycle” and “cross-country.” Race courses feature sharp turns and man-made hills that send riders airborne numerous times each lap.
The outdoor AMA Motocross Championship series begins in May and runs through mid-September, consisting of 12 events at 12 major tracks throughout the continental United States.
Each event has two “motos” (heats) for motorcycles in two classes; those with engine displacements up to 250cc, and those up to 450cc.
Each moto lasts 30 minutes, plus two laps run after the timed portion is completed. Competitors accumulate points in each race toward the championship trophy.
Race promoter Tony Miller first got involved with motocross as sponsor of the Miller Electric Race Team in 1995. Five years later his love of motocross had grown to the point that he built the Freestone County Raceway to provide a place for local riders to compete, including his son, Clayton, then on his way to becoming a pro motorcycle rider. The raceway since has achieved national standing as home to one of the pro circuit’s top events.
Miller said Berkey’s participation as a sponsor is especially meaningful to him because of knowing Bill Stevens as a motocross competitor and someone who has gone out of his way to help further the careers of aspiring young riders. “Bill Stevens has done a lot to help this sport in Texas,” Miller said.
