Heating Repair – Don’t be left out in the cold

Most people think Texas weather is just one long, hot, sticky summer (and sometimes it seems that way). But, in winter, temperatures can drop into the 20s and 30s quickly. Proper maintenance and repair for your heating system is essential in order to keep your home comfortable. Heating systems are usually trouble-free, but efficient operation is a function of good regular maintenance.

There are two main functions of a heating system: to produce heat and distribute it evenly to each area of the home. Regardless of whether a furnace burns oil, gas, or is electric, it will age and parts will wear. At some point, a furnace will have to be repaired or replaced.

When Does a Heating System Require Service?

If you are experiencing any of the following, you may need to have a professional evaluate and fix problems.

  • Circuit breaker/fuse controlling the furnace is tripped/blown
  • Thermostat not working
  • Blower fan continues to run
  • No heat in one or more locations
  • Detection of a funny smell/gas odor
  • Pilot light is out
  • The furnace is making odd noises (squealing/rumbling)
  • The furnace runs constantly
  • The system cycles on and off rapidly

When a heating system malfunctions, any one of its three main components (the burner and heat exchanger, the distribution system, or the thermostat) may be the problem. If the furnace isn’t functioning at all, the malfunction is probably the heat exchange unit or the furnace may have lost power. The fuel used to make the heat may not be reaching the unit. If the fuel is gas or oil, the burner may not be igniting properly. If the furnace turns on, but the warm air isn’t reaching every room of your home, the problem is likely to be the blower or distribution system. A faulty control sensor or the thermostat could keep the system from turning on or could cause it to turn on and off repeatedly.

The burner and heat exchanger are the most complicated parts of the heating system, and they are the most likely to suffer from neglect. Problems with the heating unit may also lead to distribution problems. Dirt is the biggest enemy of your home’s heating system. Dirt affects the entire heating system. It can waste fuel and drastically lower efficiency; so regular cleaning is the most important part of furnace maintenance. The filters should be replaced when you first turn on the heating system. Filters should also be replaced about once a month during periods of continuous use. If the filter looks clogged, replace it with a new filter of the same type and size – regardless of the length of time it has been used. Lubrication of the furnace parts and correct belt adjustment are also important to maintain heating efficiency.
